The Ultimate Reset Guide: Go from Summer Mode to School Mode

For a lot of students, summer break is one of the most relaxing times. It’s a break from a busy and disciplined school schedule. We get to sleep in, stay up late, and be able to forget what day of the week it is. Then suddenly, August arrives and the realization hits: school’s starting again!
Going from a free, worry-free summer to early mornings, assignments, and packed schedules can be overwhelming. However, it is easier if we do not wait for the first day of school to get our lives back on track. Think of the month of August as a time for a life reset.
This does not mean creating the perfect schedule or becoming the most productive student overnight. It’s more about preparing your space, habits, and most importantly, your mindset. This helps with being organized and ready for the new school year.
Reset Your Routine

During the summer, it is a possibility that you have stayed up late at night, and/or decided to sleep in. This is completely fine; everyone in the summer needs to relax and rewind. However, when school starts, having a proper sleep schedule helps you stay focused and alert during a busy school schedule. Don’t worry! This does not mean you need to start waking up extra early from tomorrow, but gradually waking up five to ten minutes earlier will help prepare you to get back into routine.
Another thing to add to your schedule is a morning routine. This could include working out, cooking breakfast, or anything that makes you happy. Gradually waking up earlier, creating a morning routine helps you get back into a consistent schedule.
According to a survey of 260 students by the Wittenborg University of Applied Sciences, students who ate breakfast regularly early in the morning with a limited fast-food intake and a good seven to eight hours of sleep seem to perform better on academic tests and have a higher GPA.
Reset Your Space
Summer; the one time in the year when my desk and room become unused and dirty. But having a dirty desk during the school year decreases productivity and provides distractions. So, it is beneficial to clean your work space in August to provide a chance to start fresh in a new school year. Having a clean space to work at helps with focus and increase productivity by removing distractions, lowering stress and mental fatigue.
Resetting your space includes:
Clean desk/room
Organize school supplies
Clean up laptop and files
Delete unnecessary photos/apps/files
Create a calm study space

Reset Your Organization
Generally, during school, students have a way of organizing their assignments, classes, and/or extracurricular commitments. In the summer, most of these time management and organization skills disappear, therefore it is beneficial to build up these skills again by:
Checking your upcoming schedule and setting up your calendar
Creating folders for classes
Finding a method to keep track of assignments

Reset Your Productivity Methods
Being productive comes easier during the school year compared to the summer as a fixed daily structure ensures you manage your time closely. In comparison, summer offers lots of open-ended freedom, which can drain motivation, habits, and make it more difficult to start tasks.
If the summer freedom structure is continued in September, it can be difficult to bounce back from missing classes, and unfinished assignments. Therefore, starting small habits that boost productivity in August will be helpful in the long run.
These habits can include:
Single Day Focus: pick one main target or task to finish first
Time Blocking: puts things directly into a calendar rather than an open-ended to-do list
Single Tasking: try to stop multitasking to prevent brain fatigue
Task Batching: group similar tasks together and complete those all at once
Quality Sleep: 7-8 hours of sleep every night
Breaks: take a break after finishing a batch of tasks

Final Notes
At first, going back to school after summer break feels terrible. However, once you see and hang out with old friends, join new clubs, and/or restart playing sports, you feel better.
It’s important to remember that education is important and it becomes easier to feel good back at school if you are mentally ready for it. Not only is a summer reset helpful for a good feeling, but it also helps with being productive as soon as school starts!
