The university application process can be a daunting experience, especially for those keen to pursue business programs. Recently, Integra Youth hosted a panel in which three university students, Kareena, and Jeri-shared some valuable insights into applications, course selection, and university life. Here are some of the main points taken from their experience.
Meet the Panelists:
Advice for the Application Process
For the panelists, the availability of extracurriculars was important. Jona recommended that students engage in activities highlighting transferable skills such as communication and organization, even if these are not within the business framework. Kareena urged students to join clubs, take on leadership roles, and network. Jeri claimed that personal statements should be strong and that applications must be tailored to the unique process of each university. Fact-checking with multiple sources was also recommended.
Deciding Factors in the Selection of Institutions
Personal and financial factors determined their choice of university. Jeri chose Waterloo/Laurier because of its co-op program. Kareena went to Schulich because of advice from family and friends and liked the fact that it is very accessible and welcoming. Jona chose Schulich over Rotman due to lower costs and better networking opportunities- with Schulich presenting a broader scope of career avenues.
Surprises and Likes of University Life
All three panelists were pleasantly surprised by the extent to which programs actually support and work collaboratively with one another. Kareena and Jona enjoyed the opportunities for networking and the case competitions at Schulich. Initially skeptical about Waterloo, Jeri grew to appreciate its environment and group projects.
Job Opportunities and Networking
All three panelists emphasized the value of the university resources. Kareena pointed to the career centers and networking events, Jona credited LinkedIn with internships, while Jeri spoke of the fierce competition for co-op programs but said they certainly open many doors.
Study Tips and Balanced Living
For fruitful study, you have to master your study habits. Jona suggested that students focus not on rewriting notes but on reviewing important texts. Accompanied by Kareena, who reiterated the pay-off of good habits and time management. To balance their lives, the panelists suggested scheduling priority settings and paying attention to mental health.
Advice to the Senior Class
In conclusion, the panel offered new students some time-honored advice: have an open mind, develop a healthy lifestyle, and avoid procrastination. According to Jona, university professors are far more challenging than high school teachers, thus the need for time management.
