Volunteering Over the Summer: Where to Start and Why It Matters

Summer break is a time many students look forward to—no classes, no exams, and lots of time to relax, recharge, and hang out with friends. But beyond the beach days and sleep ins, summer is also the perfect opportunity to do something meaningful: volunteering. Whether you're hoping to build experience, connect with new people, or make a positive impact in your community, summer volunteering can be a rewarding and even life changing way to spend your free time.

Why Volunteer?

1. Build Real World Skills

Volunteering teaches valuable skills that go far beyond the classroom. Time management, communication, leadership, problem solving, and teamwork are just a few of the abilities you can develop. These are the same skills that help in school, future jobs, and everyday life.

2. Boost Your Resume or Applications

Colleges, scholarships, and employers all appreciate candidates who show initiative and commitment. Volunteering highlights your ability to take action and care about something beyond yourself. Plus, if you’re applying to competitive programs, volunteer work can help you stand out.

3. Expand Your Social Circle

You’ll meet people from all walks of life—volunteers, supervisors, community members, and more. Working alongside others not only builds friendships but also helps you become more confident in group settings and learn from different perspectives.

4. Explore Your Passions

Not sure what you're interested in? Volunteering is a great way to test the waters. Whether you love working with kids, protecting the environment, helping animals, or supporting your local neighborhood, there’s a role that can help you figure out what lights you up.

Where to Start
Not sure where to begin? Start local.

Libraries – Great for students who love reading, organizing, or supporting community programs

Food banks – Help sort, package, or distribute food to families in need

Community centers – Assist with events, classes, or kids’ programs

Hospitals or senior homes – Provide support, companionship, or help with activities

Summer camps – Many camps look for junior counselors or activity leaders

Online platforms – Try sites like Volunteer Toronto or DoSomething.org for virtual or flexible options
